‘Over of the tournament’ Aakash Chopra heaps praise on Mohammed Shami

Indian commentator and former cricketer Aakash Chopra praised Mohammed Shami’s spell for England all-rounder Ben Stokes in India’s 100-run win over the defending champions in the ongoing World Cup. It was the eighth over that ended Stokes’s innings. Shami stayed on one line and bowled the ball away from the left-handed batsman and on the last ball he went completely straight. A frustrated Stokes tried to hit a shot but the ball quickly touched Stokes’ bat and Bell flew into the air.

Host Aakash Chopra believes that the over bowled by Mohammed Shami to Ben Stokes was the ‘over of the tournament’. “Considering that India could only manage a total of 229 – it was bound to worry anyone.” We also had to take into account dew as a major factor later on. But the way the Indian fast bowlers bowled was worth watching. Early and important wickets of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami really put them (England) on the back foot. Shami’s over for me – when he bowled Ben Stokes around the stumps, it was the ‘over of the tournament’. Overall the bowling unit worked together and completely destroyed the England batting order.

Chopra further talked about the performance of Rohit Sharma and the rest of the batting order against England. He said, “Rohit Sharma once again led from the front and I still don’t know why he was not given enough respect. When you keep losing wickets at the other end, it is difficult to maintain your innings. But he played a very important role. Suryakumar Yadav came in and helped stabilize the innings along with KL Rahul, who looked in good form but lost his wicket due to a bad shot.
