Cricket will be included in 2028 Olympics: IOC

Finally, after a long wait, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Mumbai on Monday officially announced the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics. Along with cricket, four other sports (baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse and squash) are also included. A total of 33 sports will be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In this event we will get to see T20 format of cricket.

IOC member Nita Ambani confirmed the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics.

The inclusion of cricket in the sporting program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games was a welcome addition that had the potential to attract a lot of new interest and opportunities for the Olympic Movement in new geographical areas of the world. “As an IOC member, a proud Indian and an ardent cricket fan, I am delighted that IOC members have voted to include cricket as an Olympic sport at the LA Summer Olympics 2028.’

ICC President Greg Barclay said the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is a priority for the sport’s governing body. They said,

The inclusion of cricket in the Olympic Games has been a priority for our organisation, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase our great sport and athletes at the LA28 Games, and look forward to continuing to do so.

Our selection was confirmed by I.O. C in Mumbai during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is truly a goldmine. The innings has just begun, and we can’t wait to see where this incredible journey goes.

Let us tell you that this is not the first time that we will get to see cricket in the Olympics. After this, only in the 1900 Olympic edition was a cricket match played between two teams, Great Britain and France. Great Britain won the gold medal.
