CWC 2023: Aakash Chopra refuses to keep wickets in Test against KL Rahul

KL Rahul has done a good job as a keeper behind the wicket for India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC 2023) and that is why there have been suggestions to keep him in Tests as well. However, Aakash Chopra does not agree with this.

Rahul displayed his wicketkeeping skills in the IPL for several seasons and after that, debuted in the same role for India. Before the ongoing World Cup, many experts were suggesting having a specialist wicketkeeper in the playing eleven, but Rahul has impressed everyone with his wicketkeeping in the tournament. Fielding coach T Dilip also praised him on several occasions. However, Chopra feels that India should not look at Rahul as a wicketkeeper in the Test format.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former player said that it will be very stressful for Rahul and India should keep him only as a specialist batsman in the longest format of the game. Aakash Chopra said:

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it. There is no doubt that he has kept well but there is a lot of tension. He is a good batsman. You are asking him to keep wickets in Tests because Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are opening and his place in Tests is under threat. Despite this, I would say play him as a specialist batsman.

KL Rahul not only impressed with his wicket-keeping but also performed well with the bat and also made the record for the fastest century for India in the World Cup. By the end of the World Cup group stage he had scored 347 runs at an impressive average of 69.40. During this period his strike rate was 93.53.
