CWC 2023: Joe Root becomes the most successful batsman in World Cup history


Great England batsman Joe Root played a brilliant half-century and contributed to his team’s big score in the 2023 World Cup match being played against Bangladesh in Dharamsala. During his innings, the right-handed batsman also achieved a major feat and has become the most successful batsman in the history of ODI World Cup for England in terms of runs.

Root was selected in the ODI squad for the World Cup 2023 and so far he has completely justified the faith reposed in him. He scored two half-centuries in the first innings.

After Jonny Bairstow (52) was out for 115 runs against Bangladesh, Root came to bat and made a huge partnership of 151 runs with Dawid Malan (140) to take his team’s score past 250. Root was heading towards a century but Shoriful Islam scored 302 runs in the 42nd over. This England batsman scored 82 runs in 68 balls with the help of eight fours and one six.

Before taking the field against Bangladesh, Root had scored 835 runs in 18 matches and needed 63 runs to become the leading run-scorer for England in the ODI World Cup. Root achieved this feat in the 36th over of England’s innings, leaving behind former great batsman Graham Gooch. He scored 897 runs in 21 matches.

This is Joe Root’s third ODI World Cup. He played his first World Cup in 2015 and was also a part of the winning team in 2019.
