CWC 2023: Trent Boult breaks Glenn McGrath and Muttiah Muralitharan’s record of taking 50 wickets in the World Cup

In the 41st match of the ICC ODI WORLD CUP 2023, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka (NZ vs SL) by 5 wickets with 160 balls to spare and almost confirmed their place in the semi-finals of the tournament. In this match, New Zealand’s fast bowler Trent Boult bowled brilliantly in the powerplay and dismissed three of the first five batsmen of Sri Lanka. The left-arm bowler became the first victim of Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis (6) to complete 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup. Boult became the first New Zealand bowler and sixth overall to achieve this feat in the World Cup.

During his achievement, Trent Boult left Glenn McGrath and Muttiah Muralitharan behind in different respects. The Kiwi bowler took 50 wickets in fewer innings than McGrath. The former Australian bowler had achieved the feat of taking 50 wickets in 30 innings in the World Cup, while Boult had done so in just 28 innings. With this, he has become the third fastest player to do so in terms of innings. He is followed by Australia’s Mitchell Starc (19 innings) and Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga. (25 innings).

Muttiah Muralitharan tops this list with 50 wickets.

Trent Boult has become the fourth bowler to take the fastest 50 wickets in the World Cup. He achieved this feat in 1543 balls, while Muttiah Muralitharan achieved this feat in 1562 balls. Mitchell Starc (941) is the fastest, followed by Lasith Malinga (1187) and Glenn McGrath. (1540).

Talking about Trent Boult’s bowling performance in the match against Sri Lanka, in the match played in Bengaluru, he took three wickets for 37 runs including three maidens in 10 overs.
