Sri Lanka cricket legend Percy Abeysekera passes away

Sri Lanka’s legendary fan Percy Abeysekara, who waved the national flag and cheered for the national cricket team at various stadiums, died here on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 87 years old. In the cricket world he was known as ‘Uncle Percy’. He was seen cheering for the Sri Lankan team at cricket grounds around the world.

Percy, known for his colorful clothes, started touring to cheer the Sri Lankan team from the 1979 World Cup and has since been seen at almost all major cricket tournaments. However, he did not go to India for the World Cup due to ill health. He was friends with Sri Lanka’s star cricketers such as Arjun Ranatunga, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara and also had good relations with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Rohit recently visited him at his home in Colombo during the Asia Cup. Kohli had called him into the Indian dressing room for a brief chat during the Sri Lanka tour in 2015. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has also recently donated 50 lakh Sri Lankan rupees for his medical expenses.
