“If Axar Patel had not been injured, R Ashwin would not have been in the World Cup” Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif feels that if Axar Patel had not been injured, Ravichandran Ashwin would not have been in the World Cup picture.

Axar was ruled out of the Asia Cup final due to a hamstring injury. The injury occurred during India’s Super Four match against Bangladesh on September 17, 2023. Patel suffered several injuries, including a laceration to his forearm from a deep throw and a strain in his left quadriceps. The most worrying of these is his hamstring problem, which could potentially keep him out of the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia.

Akshar has been included in the team for the third ODI against Australia on the basis of fitness.

The severity of Patel’s injury was confirmed as a small muscle tear, which usually takes about two to three weeks to heal. This recovery timeline puts Patel’s participation in the opening games of the World Cup in doubt.

Ashwin has been recalled to the Indian ODI team after almost two years due to Patel’s injury. Ashwin’s return comes ahead of the World Cup and the upcoming series against Australia, which starts on September 22, 2023.

Speaking to Star Sports as quoted by Hindustan Times, Kaif said that had it not been for Axar’s injury, Ashwin would never have been on the World Cup scene. The former cricketer feels that it may take at least two to three weeks to recover from the stress injury and hence India decided to go with Ashwin.

Kaif also said that there is no comparison between Ashwin and Washington Sundar considering Ashwin’s exploits in international cricket.

He said, “If Axar had not got injured, we would not have seen this move and Ashwin would never have been on the spot. Now Akshar has suffered a stretch injury and it takes time to recover from it. No matter what they say he will be back in a week’s time, but such injuries take at least 2-3 weeks to recover. That’s why he went to Ashwin for experience. And remember, there is no comparison between Ashwin and Sundar. He has 900 wickets (712) across all formats!
