Experiments and new technologies in sports keep changing with time. Changes can now be seen in badminton, one of the most popular sports in the world. In fact, shuttles made of feathers (wings) are used in badminton. In the last few years, experiments have been done on the use of shuttles made of nylon, but it has not been successful. Now Indian IIT professors are doing research on improving the nylon shuttle so that it can be used at a higher level and replace the feather shuttle.

The American Journal published this study.

Sanjay Mittal, 55, professor of aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and two other scientists, Jaala and Harish Dechiraju, are working on the nylon-based shuttle. Last week, Physics of Fluids, a journal of the American Institute of Physics, published a paper by Mittal, Darshan Kumar Jala, and Harish Dechiraju that explored the aerodynamic performance of a nylon shuttle at various flight speeds. His article was Computational Analysis of Fluid-Structure Interactions of Synthetic Badminton Shuttle Cocks, a study of how air flow and motion can deform the flared skirt of a shuttle.

The biggest challenge is to keep the shuttle stable.

“Our study took on the challenge of figuring out how to redistribute the nylon in the shuttle design so that it remains stiff in the right places and behaves exactly like a duck,” Mittal said. The biggest challenge is to keep the nylon shuttle stable in the air because the shape of the nylon deforms rapidly. In such a situation it shakes and its speed increases so much that the player is left with very little time to react.

improve the design

Sanjay Mittal said, “Our efforts open the possibility of improvements in its design, which could make the nylon shuttle stronger.” This helps it accurately mimic the aerodynamic performance of a winged shuttle. This experiment can prove to be a game changer in badminton.

This will make the difference.

1) shuttle of wings

– Feather shuttles do not last long and become useless after a few shots.
Cruelty towards animals will also end. The use of swan or duck feathers to make feather shuttles is considered cruel by animal lovers.

2) Nylon or synthetic shuttle.

It can be used for a long time. There is no difference in its size.
It also opens up the possibility of many new designs.
