Bowling in the right areas has given the advantage

After his team’s 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqui said he was initially looking for swing but later focused on hitting. He bowled in the right areas and achieved success.

Speaking after the match, Farooqui said, “It feels great today, we have won 3 matches in the tournament.” There is joy in contributing to the game and winning. I was looking for swing initially but couldn’t find it, so I kept it simple and bowled in the right areas. This was our plan. We struggled in the last few overs. A lot of runs were given away but we bowled with variety today and hard work in the net session helped, a few days’ rest also helped us.

Talking about the match, Afghanistan invited Sri Lanka to bat first. The Lankan Lions lost their wickets at regular intervals. Pathum Nissanka (46 runs in 60 balls), Kusal Mendis (39 runs in 50 balls) and Sadira Samarawickrama (36 runs in 40 balls) took Sri Lanka to 241 runs in 49.3 overs. Fazal Haq Farooqui (4/34) was the best bowler for Afghanistan. Mujeeb took 2 wickets while Rashid and Azmatullah Omarzai took 1 wicket each.

Chasing the target of 242, Azmatullah Omarzai (73 not out from 63 balls), Rahmat Shah (62 from 74 balls) and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (58 not out from 74 balls) scored half-centuries to help Afghanistan seal the win. Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajita took two wickets each. Farooqui won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his innings.
