Satwik-Chirag first Indian pair to achieve top spot in BWF rankings; India’s first gold in badminton in Asian Games

Moral-Chirag won India’s first gold medal in badminton at the 19th Asian Games in China. India has never won a medal in badminton at the Asian Games. PV Sindhu won the silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games. This was India’s best performance before Satwik-Chirag won the gold.

Satwik-Chirag won the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Asian Badminton Championships in April after 52 years. Earlier, only Dinesh Khanna had won a gold medal for India in this championship when he defeated Sangob Rattanasorn of Thailand in the men’s singles final in Lucknow in 1965. Earlier, the best performance of the Indian men’s doubles team in this championship has been a bronze medal, won by Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh in 1971.

Satwik-Chirag had won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games last year. She also won the French Open Super 750 title and the Indonesia Open and Swiss Open 300 titles in the current season.
