There may be a big change in captaincy due to Shreyas Iyer being out of IPL

Shreyas Iyer He is set to undergo back surgery for his lower back injury, and is thus likely to miss the entirety of IPL 2023 and the WTC Final.
Iyer missed the first Test of the series due to a back injury and returned to the team for the second Test in Delhi. In the final Test match, he again suffered a back injury and was subsequently ruled out of the ODI series against Australia.
And now it has been confirmed that the Kolkata Knight Riders captain will undergo back surgery. And in fact, his availability in the IPL this season is under threat and the player is likely to miss the entire tournament.
Shreyas Iyer is the captain of KKR and his back injury is serious. Iyer is sure to be out of the IPL starting March 31 and it will be a big blow for the Kolkata franchise.

Shreyas Iyer was appointed by KKR in 2022 and was appointed captain of the two-time IPL champions from his first season. As KKR keep an eye on Shreyas’s situation, they have three possible captain options in their team –

shakib al hassan
If Shreyas Iyer does not get a chance then Shakib Al Hasan can be a good option as captain for Kolkata Knight Riders. Shakib has extensive captaincy experience in international cricket and is an outspoken, accomplished captain, but overseas limitations will be an issue if they want to hand over the leadership role to Shakib.

The Bangladeshi all-rounder has links with KKR and has been a long-time player for them. With agility, skill and amazing leadership skills on his side, Shakib can lead the charge for the Knight Riders if Shreyas Iyer misses out.

Tim Southee
New Zealand bowler Tim Southee was included in the team by KKR last season and he has retained his place in the team this year also. In the absence of Iyer, the Kiwi bowler could be the captaincy option for KKR.

The 34-year-old has a lot of experience and has captained New Zealand in international cricket. With over 700 international wickets to his name, Southee can be one of the mainstays in the KKR team and thus play a leadership role.

Nitish Rana
Nitish Rana is the only viable Indian captain option for KKR if Shreyas Iyer is dropped. Although Rana is mostly a hot and cold player, he has the experience of captaining Delhi in domestic formats.

The southpaw would be a risky option but KKR may have no choice in terms of choosing a captain if Iyer is unavailable to them. It will be an added responsibility for the batsman, who has faced a topsy-turvy period with KKR. This will also be an opportunity for him to reinvigorate his career and the additional responsibility can play a vital role in his revival.

Why was Sunil Narine not considered?
We have not considered Sunil Narine as captain because we believe he is far more effective as the most lethal weapon in the team. Although Naren I.L. Captained Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in T20, but it is fair to rate him as a magical bowler and a swashbuckler with the bat.

Narine is a mainstay in the KKR setup as he has been since 2012. He is a fierce competitor and a leader on the field. But as the designated captain of the team, it has proved to be a tough task for the KKR legend.
