The Indian cricket team wore a black armband in memory of former captain Bishan Singh Bedi during the World Cup match against England here on Sunday. Bedi died on 23 October.

“Team India will wear black armbands today in memory of the great Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on October 23, 2023,” the BCCI said in a statement soon after the start of the World Cup match here. Bedi is survived by his wife Anju, daughter Neha and sons Angad and Gawas Inder Singh. He also has a daughter, Gilinder, from his first wife, Glenith Miles.

The former cricketer was unwell for a little over two years and had undergone several surgeries, including knee surgery. He was 77 years old. He led India in 22 Test matches from 1976–78. He represented the country in a total of 67 Tests and 10 One Day Internationals between 1967 and 1979. He also captained India in four One Day Internationals.

At the time of his retirement, Bedi was India’s most successful bowler with 266 wickets at an average of 28.71. Bedi was also a part of India’s great spin quartet which included Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan.
